Interior designer Mark McConkey says it was not until he started working on Honolulu’s Pearl Harbor, which he designed in 1983, that he was inspired to start a new design trend.
“That’s when I started to realize that a lot of the things we saw in the world of design that I loved were being put out there by people that didn’t understand the way the world worked, or what it really meant,” McConkeys told ABC News.
“They were saying, ‘Hey, this is a minimal design concept, but this is just the way it is,'” he said.
“I started to look at the people that were doing that and I was like, ‘No, I think that’s really a waste of my time.'”
Hawaii’s new design movement started with the Pearl Harbor design and it’s now growing with each passing year.
The design industry in Hawaii has seen an exponential growth with a total of almost $4 billion in revenue last year.
This has fueled a growing demand for new, innovative, and affordable interior design.
The trend started in Japan in the early 2000s, but it was only in 2014 that the trend in Hawaii began.
McConkey, a native of California, grew up in Southern California and studied architecture in the US.
He’s lived in Hawaii for a decade, and has become an avid designer in his career.
He said he began working in the design industry when he moved to Honolulu in 1983 and continued working as a consultant in Honolulu until the beginning of this year.
He believes that Hawaii’s new, minimalist, minimalist design movement is creating a new breed of interior design consultants, and he hopes the trend will continue to grow.
“I think that the people who have been doing that in the past are really creating this new generation of people who are really trying to understand the meaning of life and how the world works,” he said, “and that’s what we’re trying to build a new generation that will be more comfortable with the world that we live in.”

McConnell said that as the trend spreads, the demand for interior design is going to be great.
“It’s very easy for people to go into the industry and just see what they’re going to get out of it, and I think they’re gonna come away saying, I want to work for this person, and that’s where the demand is,” he explained.
“That’s the beauty of the trend.
That’s where we’re at.
It’s not a big market, but I think people are just hungry for something new.”
McConnell and his husband Anna spent time in Japan with an organization called the Japanese Institute of Design and Design, which focuses on the study and design of modern Japanese culture.
They also visited Hong Kong, which is also undergoing an overhaul, and Japan, which has an emerging middle class.
“The thing about Japan is, it’s a very open society, where people are really embracing what it means to be Japanese,” McConnell said.
“You see a lot more people who say, I just love Japanese culture, I really love Japanese food.
I just want to make sushi, or I want a Japanese-style apartment, or something like that,” he added.”
So that’s the next generation of designers that’s gonna come through and do a great job, and it’ll be very different from what we’ve seen in the last 30 years.”
