How to be an Indian interior designer

Indian designers are often praised for their designs and work ethic.

But there is an inner-workout aspect to their business as well, and some feel it could be a major advantage for a designer to adapt their craft to fit the changing cultural landscape.

We spoke to several interior designers from India and found some of their ideas to be particularly beneficial.

Here are 10 tips for making a lasting impression in India: 1.

Make it easy to change styles The best way to change the look of a room is by creating a range of styles, but there is no right way to go about it.

Some of our favourite examples are the traditional design of temples, which could be altered to reflect the local landscape, or the traditional look of homes, which are usually made from wood.

2.

Choose different colours For a traditional interior design you might choose a muted red, white or blue palette, but you can also add a few more options if it suits your vision.

3.

Use natural materials For a more contemporary style, you might try to use reclaimed materials.

The more natural the colour, the more likely it is to retain its original shape.

4.

Use a palette that you like Make sure that the colours you choose are natural, not glossy or shimmery, and don’t use colours you find too expensive.

5.

Be flexible and versatile Make sure you don’t go overboard with your palette choices, or you risk becoming overwhelmed with colours.

6.

Keep the space colourful and colourful don’t leave it lifeless, because colour can make a big difference in your designs.

7.

Keep your design simple and straightforward Do not use a lot of colours, as these can be very distracting and add to the clutter in the room.

8.

Don’t over-emphasise the ‘faux-ethnic’ aspect of your design Make sure your designs don’t look like they are imported from abroad, and avoid using Asian influences, such as Indian embroidery, as well as using fabrics from South Asia.

9.

Be mindful of how you look The right palette and design choices can go a long way to making your designs stand out, but a good rule of thumb is that you should try to make your designs look at home in the home of your favourite designers.

10.

Always be open to feedback Take your time, listen to what your clients say and consider your own style, as there are no right or wrong ways to go.

How to make your own interior designer’s checklist

The best advice to find a new interior designer is to start with the best people, according to interior designer and consultant, Meghan Lee.

The advice is that if you’re looking to move to the centre of the city, you’re probably better off with someone from the suburbs who’s got the same skills and knowledge as you do.

“The best thing you can do is to hire someone who is an expert at designing urban centres,” she said.

But what if you’ve been looking for a design career that’s more about design than design skills?

“There are lots of great designers that have experience in designing in a studio or a factory but they’re not the kind of people who are really looking for work as an interior designer,” Ms Lee said.

“If you’re in a creative field and you’ve worked on design projects, it’s more likely that you’ve got experience in building or designing a home.”

If you need a break from your job, Ms Lee recommends starting a small business.

“It’s a great way to build a career,” she explained.

“It’s the way that most people with a degree can get a start, and a business is where you can build that.”

You’ll need to know the basics to find the right job in an interior design field, but the key is to be comfortable and familiar with a range of design styles.

Ms Lee said that while there are some good opportunities out there, there’s no guarantee you’ll land a design job in your first year.

“You have to be confident that you’re going to work with a professional who’s going to do the work,” she added.

“You have the right skillset and you have to have a good work ethic, and that will lead you to success.”

You should be able to handle a variety of work, whether it’s interior design or design projects like homes, apartments or apartments for rent.

“There’s no one right way to do it.

You have to find someone that fits your personality,” Ms Lees advice to start a career as an architect.
