“There’s an image of this car in my mind.
It’s a 1980 Cadillac DeVille,” says Michael Smith, a design director with the Los Angeles-based architectural firm Smith and Partners.
“This was the first model in the world to feature a carbon fiber body.”
The Cadillac DeVilles are an interesting example of what we might call the “designer car” or “design car of the future.”
The concept was inspired by the design of the original DeLorean, a car whose designers envisioned a car that would be driven by a human, not a robot.
“Designers don’t want to look like they’re doing anything,” Smith explains.
“They want to do something they can control.”
The design team at Smith and Sons wanted to make a car with a fully automated driving system that could do everything the DeLorean did.
The goal was to build a vehicle that was as autonomous as possible, which Smith and others believed was possible because of advances in computer-controlled driving.
The DeLorean was the pinnacle of the DeLoreans futuristic technology, and its popularity led to a slew of cars that followed suit.
The car of today, however, is much more than an extension of the design team’s dreams.
“In many ways, the DeLoretes are still very much alive and well,” says Smith.
“There are so many things about it that are still relevant today.

It was the result of a deal struck between the DeLormas designer and the car’s owner, the late John DeLorean.
“We bought the car from him, we put the car on display, and we made sure the car was preserved and protected for future generations,” Smith says.
But that didn’t mean the car wasn’t a bit of a work in progress.
The designers wanted to add a second seat, which didn’t make much sense.
So they redesigned the interior to make the car look like a DeLorean that had been driven by an automaker.
“It was a lot more expensive than we expected, and the designers were still not satisfied with the interior,” says John DeLorean.
“And it was a little bit of an exercise in futility, because they were not going to build an automobile with a second seating position.”
“We had a good idea of what the DeLorans interior would look like,” Smith adds.
“When we started designing, we wanted it to look similar to the DeLoros interior.

The design was still based on the basic DeLorean design.
“Our concern was not so much with how much money we were going to make, but rather how much we were willing to spend,” says Anthony Smith, Smith and Son’s design director.
“So the goal was really to keep it as close to the original design as possible.
But it was not a cheap car.”
The team also considered the fact that the car would have to be modified to be more practical.
The new design took into account how the vehicle was designed.
“That was the most significant factor, which is why we decided to modify the car,” Smith notes.
“Instead of using the original concept, we designed the car with an entirely new concept, which has a lot of components that are not the same as the original.”
The car would also be more efficient than the DeLores original design.
The team wanted to be able to put the new design into the body of the vehicle and still maintain the car as functional as possible in terms of the safety features.
The result of that was a car in which the center of gravity is fixed at the front axle, with the driver’s seat being in the back.
“You can see that, at least in the initial model, we were not interested in going for a conventional car,” says Joseph Hargrove, Smith & Sons design director and a co-founder of the company.
“I think it would be a shame to lose the feeling of driving in a car.”
Smith says the DeLorenzo design was very different from that of the other DeLorean models.
The original design didn’t feature the original “tweaks” that have been added in the DeLoro line since the 1990s, including a lower steering wheel and lower center of mass.
“At the same time, we did not want to go into this car thinking it’s going to be a regular DeLorean,” Smith points out.
“Like all of us, we all wanted to build our own cars.
